At last week’s Fetch show in Baltimore, I bumped into Marie, a long time friend (who loves our mats!) and who is the  Clinic & Breeding Director at a wonderful organization, The Seeing Eye.

The Seeing Eye is a philanthropic organization whose mission is to enhance the independence, dignity, and self-confidence of blind people through the use of Seeing Eye® dogs. The work they do is incredible, and their German Shepherds are a breed that we just love! (Image of GS?) They have carried on their wonderful mission since 1929!

Vacation and travel season is almost here, and the likelihood increases that we’ll all come across a blind person who is accompanied by one of these marvelous, helpful dogs.

They’re not pets in the usual sense of the word, but instead, are working dogs…..mindful every minute of their “job” to help guide.

Some tips when you meet a Seeing Eye Dog:

• Distracting a dog in any way can make its owner vulnerable to harm. That means don’t say hi, make eye contact, or pet the Guide Dog.
• Never let your pet near a Seeing Eye Dog. Letting them “say hi” can cause the Guide Dog to lose focus.
• Never pet a Guide Dog if it is wearing a harness. A harness means that it is working.
